How Ontario Residents Can Save Money on Travel in 2022

What’s the Scoop?

Many Canadians are unaware that there are some serious savings to be had this summer when you travel in Ontario.

Travel can be a big expense for families and so it’s key to find opportunities where you can find the savings that count.

After a long winter, there’s nothing better than going out for an adventure with your loved ones and making memories that will last a lifetime.

The Staycation Tax Credit

The good news is that the province of Ontario is incentivizing travel for families in Ontario with the Staycation Tax Credit.

We don’t want to sound like a broken record here, but it’s well-known that the Canadian economy, and many families across the country, took a big hit from the pandemic.

This is why the province is working to help the tourism and hospitality sectors out.

When Ontario residents travel and spend money within the province, it helps Canadian businesses thrive, and when families can get a good discount, everybody wins!

Serious Savings

If you’re an Ontario resident and looking to travel within Ontario, you can claim 20% of your eligible 2022 accommodation expenses when it comes time to file your personal Income Tax and Benefit Return for 2022.

This can actually make a big difference because you’re able to claim eligible expenses up to $1,000 as an individual or $2,000 if you have a spouse, common-law partner or eligible children.

This means that if you file your claim as an individual, you can get back up to $200 and if you make your claim as a family, you can get back $400!
