Niagara Wines and Cabin Times

Is Niagara Wine That Good?

Niagara is known nationally and internationally for producing fantastic wines and ice wines – it’s no surprise that people travel from far and wide to visit the wineries in the region.

This is why we like to recommend to our guests that they go for a fun wine tasting and tour when they visit!

But what makes Niagara wine so special?

Niagara’s Unique Climate

The unique geography of the Niagara Region provides the ideal climate for growing grapes for the production of wine.

Niagara is one of the top wine producers in Canada and much of this reputation is thanks to the high elevation, warm spring weather and cold winters in the region.

The rich soil in Niagara is located between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment which provides the perfect shelter from the strong southwesterly winds.

In the Fall, the Niagara Escarpment traps the warm air, extending the wine season significantly.

From Prohibition to Pro-Production

Inniskillin was the first winery to be granted a license in Ontario since the 1916 Prohibition era.

In the years that followed, more and more wineries began to open in the region and the industry started to boom.

The Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) program was established which set strict standards for production in an effort to maintain high quality wine in the region and be competitive nationally.

So when you pick-up a bottle of wine during your stay in Niagara that has the VQA label on it, you can rest assured that your local wine of choice is meeting a high standard.
